Mahlers influence on German Nationalism in music
«

I am a student currently studying Music at [.....] University. I am writing an essay on Nationalism in German music during the Romantic period, and hope to include Mahler as my third composer to study. However, I know very little about him, and having come across this Society on the web, was wondering if there was anyone who would be willing to guide me in the right direction with regards to my essay title, "An Essay Comparing and Contrasting the Works of Mendelssohn, Wagner and Mahler, and their influence on German Nationalism in Music"
I would be very grateful for any responses
Yours sincerely,
Martin Elsey

please tell me, what you mean nearer using "German Nationalism" in any case of influence in music named by Mendelssohn/Wagner or Mahler for their times.

Inasmuch as GM was an Austrian - and a Jew - if he had *any* influence on German nationalism in music it was inadvertent, I would think, and certainly a subconscious thing on whomever was "influenced."
I mean, after Wagner in the mid-19th century, and perhaps R. Strauss (The Alpine and Heldenleben), there weren't any composers of great importance who could be considered German nationalists, were there?
Bob (Please forgive my computer-generated translation)
