Can I ask if anyone knows about the copyright issues surrounding unpublished handwritten materials by Mahler? If something came to light in an auction or somewhere -- a new letter, say --  and there were plans to publish it, from whom would permission need to be sought...? Would it perhaps be Marina Mahler whom one would need to ask...?

Thanks for all thoughts!

Issue number 61 ( English edition not yet published) of the News Journal mentions the Mahler Calendar of Franz & Florian Willnauer.

It is a very nice and attractive item; I have one hanging on the wall of my study.  I purchased it at the Austrian Theater Museum in Vienna last month.

The New Critical Edition of VII, edited by Dr. Kubik will be issued soon,  It will be a much more accurate version than that published as long ago as 1960 by Dr. Ratz, since more sources have been taken into account.  In any case, the old edition was out of print for a long time.

The Edition Peters new Critical Edition of V was also edited by Reinhold Kubik, not Jerry Bruck.  Also in this case, the new edition replaces the earlier one.  Peters had sold out of the old Critical Edition and offered the IGMG the chance to bring the edition up to date, incorporating findings that post-dated the Ratz edition.

I cannot see the Ratz editions being reprinted (at least until they are out of copyright), nor any need for that to happen.

In the meantime, you may find the edition by Hans Redlich of interest.  It is published by Eulenburg if still available.

Dear K.G.,

This is probably too late to be of much (if any) use.  Notwithstanding, let me say that I am highly skeptical that Mahler had ever made such a statement - in fact, he had more than once expressed sentiments that conveyed precisely the opposite 'meaning'!  Is it possible that that is the reason for the absence of a citation in Vago's memoirs??
Still, if you have (or someone else has) found the answer in the meantime, would you please enlighten us?

I've been looking for the Critical Edition of Mahler's Seventh Symphony from Bote & Bock (handled by Boosey & Hawkes) in an Octavo Score (Study Score) format for months, however every shop and retailer I've contacted in the UK, they've told me that this product is out of print.

Now, I don't know if this score is going on for a reprint by Bote & Bock, but someone has informed me of a 'New Critical Edition' (Neue Kritische Gesamtausgabe) of this symphony is in preparation, but it has not yet been released. This is supposedly an improved edition of the current critical edition by Ratz. The new editor for this series is Kubik.

Although I do not understand why Ratz's edition has gone out of print, I can see that the New Critical Edition is taking over some of the works. For example, Edition Peters released a New Critical Edition of Mahler's Sixth Symphony earlier this year (edited by Jerry Bruck). Although this a very good edition, this has caused Peters to remove the Critical Edition by Ratz (KT 4526) from their catalogue. I'm not sure if it is going out of print, but I think that this situation applies in the case of the Seventh Symphony.

I am looking forward to the New Critical Edition of Mahler 7, but can anyone please tell me what is going on with Ratz's critical edition at the moment and when the seventh symphony is due to be released?

Wir hätten uns sowohl in Jihlava als auch in Kaliste am 7.7.10 treffen können; denn ich war auch dort... Schön!

I just want to second Stan Wilson's glowing report on the events of 7.7.2010 in Jihlava and Kaliste.  It was indeed a wonderful and memorable day.  I only regret not meeting Stan Wilson there...!

When Mahler's statue was unveiled in Jihlava, the military band played an arrangement of the offstage band music from part III of Das klagende Lied.  I thought that was a great touch!
